In Suspect Terrain

The insular language of geology is a world

unto itself.  What are the uninitiated to think of

orogenies and cratons?  When John McPhee

speaks of a geological process as if in "suspect

terrain" one can only wonder in wonder at the

metaphorical and allusive nature of the term:

it is the predicament of

human existenence.
